JUNGIAN THEORY FOR STORYTELLING

(Routledge, 2018)

If you want to know how to write narratives using Jungian Psychology - this book is for you.

How can archetypes and the individuation be incorporated into your stories, video games, screenplays, films, documentaries, adverts, etc., to create popular, meaningful and effective narratives?

This book explains theory in accessible terms. It provides detailed descriptions of archetypal narratives, character types, endings and sequences. It also gives you plenty of examples from existing books, films and TV series.

(Routledge, 2018; co-authored with Catriona Miller)

The time is right to re-examine narratives for and about women within screen based texts.  Using examples from different kinds of screen media, and taking due account of the multimodal nature of the texts under discussion, this book will show the many types of female quest in moving image narratives, ranging from ‘traditional’ female individuation (daughter, mother or victim) to masculinised types of journey (soldier, knight or detective), paying attention to the patriarchal societal norms which still exist in western societies, which exerts a distorting gravitational effect upon the individuation quests of women.

Cinema has always been the mirror of society, reflecting everything from social change to political anxieties, whilst simultaneously, from a discourse theory perspective, helping to create society.  The Heroine’s Journey: Female Individuation On Screen will map the still largely patriarchal terrain screen heroines navigate, in order to explore the touchpoints and divergences with women’s individuation journeys. Moreover, rather than presenting only a Jungian angle on the feminine, the book will compare and contrast the Jungian and the Freudian approaches to women on screen.

NARCISSISM AND SOCIETY (provisional title)

(Routledge, 2019)

This book will explore various aspects of narcissism; particularly its social and group manifestations, from corporate behaviour to mass hysterias and political scandals. At the heart of the book are the ideas of attention, validation, social mask and social exchange.
